What Is a UX Designer? What They Do and When You Need One

UX designer is one of those job titles everyone uses and few people can define. UX stands for user experience - how a product feels to use. A UX designer’s job is to make your website or app easy, clear and pleasant for the people who use it.
What a UX Designer Actually Does
A UX designer works on the journey, not the decoration. Their typical work includes researching what users need, planning how pages and screens connect, drawing wireframes (simple layouts before any visual design), testing designs with real people, and fixing the points where users get lost or give up. The goal is simple: a visitor should reach what they came for without thinking hard.
UX vs UI: the Difference
People mix these up constantly. UX is the experience - is it easy to find the pricing page, does the checkout make sense, can someone book in two taps? UI (user interface) is the surface - colours, fonts, buttons, spacing. A site can look beautiful (good UI) and still confuse visitors (bad UX). Good projects need both, which is why they are usually offered together as UI/UX design.
Why It Matters for a Business Website
Confused visitors leave. If people cannot find your phone number, your services or your prices in a few seconds, they go to a competitor. UX work is what turns visits into calls and enquiries. Research groups like Nielsen Norman Group have documented for decades how small usability problems cost businesses real customers.
Signs Your Site Has a UX Problem
Visitors leave quickly without contacting you. People call to ask questions the site should answer. Your mobile site is just a shrunken desktop page. Forms get started but not finished. Any of these means the experience is getting in the way of the business.
When You Need a UX Designer
Redesigning an old website, building something new, or getting traffic but no enquiries - these are the moments UX work pays for itself. For a brand-new small business site, UX thinking is usually part of a good website design and development project rather than a separate hire. Planning a redesign?
